John Andrew “Iceman” Rounce

18 April 1964 – 24 April 2025 · 61 years

Lifelong rocker, CB-radio legend and biker at heart.

Dad to Shane Rounce and Daniel Damien Rounce.

John Andrew Rounce - better known to many of his friends on the CB radio as Iceman - was born on 18 April 1964 and died on 24 April 2025, aged 61.

From Gorleston-on-Sea to Great Yarmouth, Germany and finally Sheffield, John packed a great deal into his six decades.

He attended Claydon High School before studying at Great Yarmouth College of Further Education. As a young man, he joined the British Army and was posted to Germany. A neck injury brought his time in uniform to an end, but it never stopped the stories from those years.

John later made Sheffield his home. During the early 1990s, he became one of the city's friendliest bus drivers, first driving the little Eager Beavers and later Mainline's double-deckers.

Away from the buses, John was a lifelong rocker, a CB-radio legend and a biker at heart - even after he had parted with his final motorcycle. Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden and Evanescence were never far from the stereo.

To his family he was John or Dad. On the radio, he was Iceman: a familiar voice, a memorable character and part of Sheffield's CB community.

He collected Native-American art and tattoos, and later developed a fascination with all things Viking. He loved rock music, motorcycles, radios and the stories and friendships that came with them.

His later years were quieter and more relaxed: favourite films on the telly, classic rock turned up loud and the simple pleasures he enjoyed. Those closest to him remember the everyday details too - the blue jeans he was almost never seen without, the band shirts, hoodies, familiar routines and an enormous mug waiting for another cup of tea.

John was the father of two sons, Shane Rounce and Daniel Damien Rounce.

Whatever else people knew him as - soldier, bus driver, biker, rocker or Iceman - Shane and Daniel knew him as Dad.

Daniel died before his father, and John had made his final wish clear: when his own time came, he wanted to be buried beside his younger son.

That wish was honoured.

John was given the Sheffield send-off he would have wanted. Riders accompanied him on his final journey, forming a biker escort for his last ride through the city. He was then laid to rest beside Daniel at City Road Cemetery.

The gathering that followed was closer to a rock gig than a traditional wake. Friends, former colleagues, riders and CB pals came together in jeans, band shirts, leathers and hoodies - the clothes John himself would have recognised.

He is remembered by everyone who shared a road, a radio channel, a story or a song with him.
